Caring For Your Air Plant

Tillandsia, affectionately known as air plants, are epiphytes—meaning they absorb moisture and nutrients through their leaves, not roots. Whether perched on driftwood or nestled in glass, they thrive with a touch of care and a breath of fresh air. Here you can find tips on how to make sure your air plant is happy in your home.

Where to place your air plant

Placement

Place in bright, indirect light. Near a window is ideal, but avoid direct or harsh light as your leaves may become scorched.

As Air Plants love humidity, placing them in a bathroom can be a good idea. By doing this you can reduce the amount of water they need, busy bathrooms will mean you won’t need to water them at all.

How to water your air plant

Watering

We recommend a plant mister for your air plant, you should mist the leaves at least once a fortnight and at least weekly in the summer.

If your Air Plant can be easily removed from its display, you can also consider soaking this for 20 minutes once a fortnight.

If you do this, make sure to remove excess water by gently shaking the droplets off.

Air circulation for your air plant

Air Circulation

Air Plants love... Air! If you can, you should keep them in a well ventilated space, this helps them to dry out after watering and can prevent rot.

Temperature for your Air Plant

Temperature

Air Plants prefer a temperature between 10-30c, don’t leave them exposed to cold weather or next to direct heat sources.

how to feed your air plant

Plant feed

To help your air plant grow or even bloom they can be fed with a diluted liquid fertiliser specifically formulated for air plants.

Air Plants cannot be fed with normal plant fertiliser due to the way in which they break down Nitrogen.

Dilutable feeds can simply be applied to the water you're spraying onto the leaves or dunking the plant into.
