Caring for your Kokedama

Kokedama is a Japanese art form dating back over 400 years which relates to pot-less plants using moss to create the "pot". The Kokedama holds moisture and nutrients for the plant, so it's essential you take good care of these to keep them at their best.

Watering

Soak: Submerge the moss ball in a bowl of room-temperature water for 15–30 minutes.

-If you have our Orchid variety this should be done weekly.

-For our Tillandsia Cyanea variety (Look like a pink quill) this can be done once a month in the summer, but you must allow the moss to completely dry out before re-soaking.

Once you have soaked gently squeeze out excess water without disturbing the binding.

In addition to soaking we recommend that you lightly mist the leaves lightly in the morning if your home is dry.

Tip: If the moss feels brittle or pale, it’s thirsty. If it smells musty or feels soggy, ease off to prevent root rot.

where to place your Kokedama

Placement

Place in bright, indirect light—a north or east-facing window is ideal.

Avoid direct sun, which can scorch leaves and dry out the moss too quickly.

Keep away from radiators, draughts, or cold windowsills.

A humidity tray or occasional misting helps mimic their tropical origins.

maintaining your kokedama

Maintenance

If roots begin to peek through the moss, you can:

Rewrap with fresh moss and re-tie

Trim roots gently and prune the plant

Let it grow naturally—just keep the moss moist

Feeding your Kokedama

Feeding (Orchid Varieties)

If your Kodkedama has an Orchid as it's plant you can also feed this to help it flower and promote growth:

During spring and summer, feed monthly with a diluted orchid fertiliser.

Skip feeding in winter when growth slows.
